The first workshop I completed at Kunsthøgskolen i Bergen was called 2D surface: pattern and ornamentation. We all began by drawing bananas, I was a bit apprehensive..(how far can a banana take you), but the work from all the students varied so much from this same starting point and there wasn't a banana insight at the end. We learnt to take any object, and from line drawings of that mundane object, create motifs to use for pattern and surface design.
We took a section of a drawing of our bananas and explored different ways of making outlines, filling in areas and creating shadows.
We then took our shape and layered it and multiplied it to create new shapes and motifs.And then used these to try out different repeat patterns.
